FAQ

Do I need to bring my own surfboard and equipment?

No, you don't need to bring your own surfboard or equipment. All necessary surf gear, including surfboards, will be provided during your lessons. However, if you prefer using your own equipment, you are welcome to bring it. The water temperature in Sri Lanka is very warm at around 26-28°C so you do not need a wetsuit. We suggest you bring a rash vest or long sleeve swimming costume as the sun is very strong and you can get easily burnt in the water.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, travel insurance is required for all participants. It’s important to have coverage that includes medical expenses, travel delays, and any potential injuries while surfing. We recommend reviewing your policy to ensure it covers surf activities.

Do you arrange airport transfers?

We do not provide airport transfers directly, but we can recommend reliable companies that offer affordable transfers from the airport to the retreat. We will provide you with contact details to help arrange your transfer.

Do I need to buy my own meals?

Breakfast is included daily, and we also provide 4 dinners at the villa during the retreat. You will need to arrange your own lunch each day, giving you the freedom to explore local cafes and restaurants. We will provide recommendations for great spots nearby.

What type of accommodation is available?

Our accommodation is in shared rooms at the retreat villa. There are 2 x 4 bed rooms, and 1 x 2 bed room. This setup fosters a friendly and social atmosphere, allowing you to connect with other participants.

I’m a beginner surfer – is this retreat suitable for me?

Absolutely! Our retreat is designed for all levels, including beginners. Our instructors will guide you through the basics, and each lesson is tailored to your skill level, ensuring a supportive and fun learning environment.

What should I bring to the retreat?

We recommend bringing swimwear, sunscreen including zinc, beach towels, a hat, sandals, comfortable clothing, and any personal toiletries. If you prefer using your own surf gear, you are welcome to bring it. Don't forget a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated!

What is the daily schedule like?

Each day includes a mix of surfing lessons, free time, therapeutic workshops, and group activities. We provide a balanced schedule that allows plenty of time to surf, relax, explore the area, and enjoy the retreat.

Can I explore the local area during the retreat?

Yes! The retreat is designed to provide a mix of structured activities and free time, giving you the opportunity to explore local beaches, cafes, and attractions. We can suggest great places to visit in your free time.

What if the weather isn’t suitable for surfing?

Surf conditions can vary, but our experienced instructors will always find the best spots and times for lessons. If the weather is not suitable for surfing on a particular day, we will adjust the schedule and offer alternative activities, such as additional workshops or local excursions.

Is there Wi-Fi at the retreat villa?

Yes, the retreat villa has Wi-Fi available for all guests, so you can stay connected if needed.

What’s the group size for the retreat?

We keep our retreat groups small, with a maximum of 10 participants. This allows for a more intimate experience in which you can get to know everyone fully, with plenty of one-on-one attention from the surf instructors and a close-knit, supportive environment.

Where is Hiriketiya?

Hiriketiya is a small town on the South Coast of Sri Lanka, roughly 3 hours from the airport. You can choose to get a private taxi from the airport to the retreat which costs around £40-50. You can also get to Hiriketiya by train, or bus. Hiriketiya is small enough that you can walk around and explore all the local cafes, shops, and bars within 30 minutes, whilst also being large enough that there is plenty of variety!

What are the waves like in Hiriketiya?

Hiriketiya is the ideal surf location as it offers a range of waves perfect for all skill levels all on one beach! You’ll find forgiving beginner waves that are ideal for those just starting out, and mellow green waves for longboarders, and intermediate surfers. There’s also a gnarly left-hander point break for more advanced surfers looking for a challenge.
